Javier Montenegro is a Principal Investigator at the Center for Research in Biological Chemistry and Molecular Materials (CiQUS), University of Santago de Compostela (Spain). His research focuses on supramolecular chemistry, chemical biology and synthetic cells, with particular emphasis on the development of functional peptide-based materials, membrane-active systems and artificial cellular platforms. His group combines molecular design, biomembrane engineering and systems chemistry to develop innovative approaches for understanding and mimicking complex biological functions.

The Montenegro Lab develops supramolecular and biomolecular systems that enable the construction of functional synthetic cells. Our research focuses on membrane-active peptides, artificial membrane transport, peptide self-assembly, biomolecular engineering and functional protocell components. By integrating chemistry, chemical biology and systems chemistry, we aim to create synthetic cellular platforms capable of communication, compartmentalization and controlled biological functions, contributing to the development of next-generation synthetic cell technologies.
