About Irene Otero-Muras, leader of the Computational Synthetic Biology Group
Irene is a chemical engineer by training and holds a PhD in applied mathematics; her expertise lies in the design, analysis, optimisation, and control of biomolecular circuits for synthetic biology. She develops engineering approaches to implement complex functionalities, with a particular focus on cellular cognition and decision-making in programmable biological systems.
About Ángel Goñi-Moreno, leader of the Biocomputation Lab
AGM is a computer scientist by training and holds a PhD in synthetic biology. His expertise lies in the design and implementation of genetic circuits for molecular computation, from genetic logic gates to memories. His Lab works with soil bacteria, programming these cellular chassis for future environmental application.
“Our expertise will contribute to the rational assembly of biomolecular modules and genetic circuits into synthetic cells by providing design principles for integrating sensing, information processing, and decision-making functions. We investigate the performance of multiple cellular hosts on the same genetic construct, thus generating knowledge about the host context that is valuable for inferring general rules. This systems-level approach will support the development of synthetic cells with cognitive capabilities, enabling adaptive responses and increasingly sophisticated cellular functionalities.”
